Chrome

The web browser from Google. Many people like Chrome as it displays web pages very quickly.

CMS

CMS stands for contact management system - a set of code and databases that organizes and manages the content of a web site.

content management system

A system consisting of code and a database that organizes and delivers web content. A CMS is used to manage and organize large sites, avoiding the overhead of custom coding and designing individual web pages.

css

Cascading style sheets - code that is shared across web pages to provide common effects, like color, fonts, positioning, etc.

domain name

A domain name is is the name of an organization or product that translates into an IP (Internet Protocol) address that can be loaded into your browser.

Drupal

An open source content management system used to develop web sites.

Firefox

Firefox is a popular, free, open source browser from the Mozilla Foundation. Firefox is often used by developers as it has many handy plug-ins.

Flash

Adobe Flash is a multimedia file format that allows display of audio and video along with interactive graphic displays.

Forum

An online, threaded discussion on a web site.

GIF

GIF is a still image file format. GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. GIF’s can display transparency and it can display animations. However, GIF’s often do not have the depth and breadth of color for many applications.

The world’s most popular search engine, found at www.google.com.

host

An organization that provides resources and service for a web page.

html

Hypertext markup language - the code that displays a web page.

hyperlink

A clickable section of a web site that takes you to another web page.

IE

Shorthand for Internet Explorer, the web browser from Microsoft.

The web browser from Microsoft. For folks using Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer is set as the default browser.

internet protocol

Internet protocol (IP) is an organization scheme allowing data to be transferred across the internet.

Internet Service Provider

An organization that provides computer processing, disc space and access to the internet for your web site, email and other online applications.

IP address

An IP address is the location of a device, such as your web site. There are two versions. An example of an IP v4 address is 123.123.123.123.

ISP

Internet Service Provider. A company that provides connectivity to the internet.

iTunes

Apple’s proprietary software and online distribution system for music, video and podcasting.

jargon

Terminology which has been defined for a specific activity, profession, or group.

java

A programming language originally from Sun Microsystems that embeds intelligence into web pages.

javascript

An object-oriented programming language that is used to enbed intelligence and special effects into web sites.

JPEG

A still image format that compresses image files to a 10:1 radio. Files could have the suffix of jpeg or jpg. JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group.

Jquery is a library of Javascript functions that can add advanced functions to a web site.

Linux

The open source operating system that is used for many web servers, desktop computers, TV’s, and many other computer appliances.

An open source web browser from the Opera Software company and runs on a wide variety of operating systems.

The proprietary (closed source) operating system for Apple computers.

PHP is a general-purpose computer scripting language that adds functionality and advanced features to a web site.

PNG

PNG is a graphic file format. PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. PNG’s allow transparent backgrounds for web page applications.

python

An open source high-level programming language used in web development.

Quicktime

Quicktime is a multimedia format developed and distributed by Apple and a competitor to Adobe Flash and Windows Media.

Safari

The web browser from Apple that is the default browser for Mac’s, but there is also a version for Windows.

Online services that index the content of the internet and display results based upon your search words.

URL

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. Simply, a URL is what you would type on your browser’s command line, e.g. http://www.helpmewithmywebsite.com/glossary.
